    For one month, June 11 through July 11, 2010, South Africa will be hosting the FIFA World Cup soccer tournament. There will be tourists from around the world, all of whom will be making multiple long distance phone calls to friends, family, and co-workers from their hotel rooms and at local call centers.

    Seeing the huge opportunity the FIFA World Cup afforded the VoIP telecommunications industry, Accessglobal Communication decided to capitalize on this. Accessglobal Communications is a leading service provider, in South Africa, headed by Mr. Ben Attar. Mr. Attar decide to expand the company’s current VoIP solution to be ready for the large influx in calls the FIFA World Cup would bring. He wanted to offer superior voice quality while utilizing the latest technology and features while offering competitive rates.

    The Challenge

    Given the volume of calls generated by the FIFA World Cup, the company needed to rapidly expand its current system capacity to support more simultaneous calls, more calls per second and ensure that quality was not compromised during this process, being able to deliver variety of calling options. Moreover, in South Africa, resellers have limited capabilities to allow customers to recharge their calling cards and other telephony services with credit cards. Without an easy, secure method to recharge accounts, Mr. Attar was faced with trying to figure out how to let his customers conveniently take advantage of a rechargeable VoIP solution for international calls. He needed something that would be accessible anywhere customers needed it; all without the need of a credit card.

    The Solution

    Mr. Attar contacted IPsmarx, known for its fully integrated customer management and billing solutions for carriers, VoIP Calling Card Operators and ISPs. Mr. Attar was looking for a turnkey solution that minimized risk, yet provided high availability, security, support and reliable billing options. He already had deployed IPsmarx Softswitch and Callshop Solutions in different locations and was looking to upgrade his system to accommodate the influx of customers coming to watch the FIFA World Cup.

    IPsmarx’s flexible, customizable platform was able to address Mr. Attar’s needs. The solution included a variety of services that allowed visitors to call from their hotels using a Calling Card, Pin-less Services and Broadband VoIP phones.

    The IPsmarx Application Manager, and other monitoring tools, such as Call Monitor, have been configured to allow service providers to keep track of call load during the games and specially designed features to allow resellers to be able to provide efficient services during the high traffic time of the event. Calls will be routed through Voice over IP, supported by multiple, redundant back-up carriers, and will be set up to maximize the capacity and efficiency of each provider.

    To overcome the problematic credit card recharge issue, IPsmarx designed a pin-based recharge system that would allow Mr. Attar’s resellers to offer services without having to process credit card payments. The customer will be given an account number (PIN) that will be used to quickly recharge their accounts, thus eliminating the risk of fraudulent or stolen credit card transactions. Also, credit card processing fees (usually about 2.5% of the transaction) will be avoided. The process is simple for the customer and reseller, and takes only seconds to complete. The System provides other features as pin-less dialing, speed dial phone book, to allow easy and quick access to common dialed numbers.

    Additionally, IPsmarx customized the new system architecture to ensure higher capacity and call per second capabilities. The Reseller interface was upgraded to IPsmarx’s more sophisticated Reseller Enterprise Edition to support multilayer operations and varied calling methods, all under the same high capacity reseller interface.


    The Outcome

    IPsmarx was able to customize a system to meet the customer’s requirements and overcome local payment issues. IPsmarx provided Mr. Attar with a seamless infrastructure that allows his customers to take advantage of low cost calling, with the most competitive long distance rates in South Africa.
